Harvest-Of-Hope Empowerment Garden

The Harvest-Of-Hope Empowerment Garden (HOH) creates an economical means for ASL to provide fresh vegetables. The primary recipients are the 200 income-challenged Senior Citizens served through our Senior Nutrition & Wellness Program. These seniors are all 60 years of age or older, and all reside within Mobile County. Some live alone, some are raising grandchildren or grand-nieces and nephews, and others live in multigenerational households.
As the cost of food escalates, the challenge to eat healthy becomes more difficult. ASL experiences the effects of rising food costs similarly to those experienced by our seniors. In maintaining the standard of provision that we choose to provide, we diligently work with dedicated volunteers, to create an environment that encourages healthy activities, environmental awareness and teamwork. HOH empowers ASL to provide more fresh vegetables to our seniors at a lower cost. While the primary function of HOH is to grow safe and healthy vegetables to support income-challenged senior citizens, we will also provide food assistance on an as needed basis, to others in need, when we can. As the garden grows and we harvest crops, anything harvested in excess of what is needed for our programs will be sold and 100% of the proceeds will be reinvested in the garden. Ultimately, our goal is for HOH to sustain itself. |

Since our inception in 2007, ASL has worked to provide food security within the community for individuals and families who are often overlooked, with a special emphasis on senior citizens. According to the World Food Programme, “People are considered food secure when they have availability and adequate access at all times to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.” Working with 12 volunteer sites and 50-75 volunteers every month ASL provided over 1.5 Million pounds of nutritious foods through more than 30,000 individual distributions by the end of 2016.
